Canopy walk at the Forest Institute of Malaysia
Taman Negara is located east of Kuala Lumpur in the
states of Pahang, Kalantan and Terengganu. It is
considered the oldest rain forest in the world (about  130
million years old)  There you can take a canopy walkway
through the forest, swim, fish, jungle walk, explore caves
and go on a night safari.

MALAYSIA
This sanctuary is located just a couple of miles from the
town of Lumut in the state of Perak. Visitors get the
opportunity to learn about the turtles in their natural
habitat. Run by the Department of Fisheries, this hatchery
and research center is a quiet stretch of beach and main
landing area for the Green Turtle, Olive Ridley Turtle and
Painted Terrapin.

Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary
The National Department of Wildlife and National Parks
established the Kuala Gandah Elephant Sanctuary in
1989. The center is geared towards the plight of the
endangered Malaysian elephant. Elephants are tracked
down, sedated and relocated from their natural habitat
that have been encroached by human developments,
namely plantations. The captured wild elephants are then
relocated to National Parks.

Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve
The Matang Mangrove Forest Reserve is also located a
couple of miles from the town of Lumut in the state of
Perak. An unusual sight to see, these salt resistant trees
along the coastline, have their roots exposed above the
soggy earth. A boardwalk winds it way through the forest
reserve.

Wildlife Cruising Around Malaysia
There are navigable rivers in all parts of Malaysia as well as swampy mangroves along the coast. The most suitable for wildlife exploration
are those with calmer waters where the observer can look out patiently with binoculars and have their cameras ready. Cruises can be early
in the day, mid-evening or at night, depending on the type of fauna targeted for viewing.

Sungai is the Malaysian word for river, and among the more established sites for cruising is Sungai Kilim in Langkawi Island, where tree
crabs, iguanas and macaques are seen among the trees and mangroves. Sungai Selangor, just two hours from Kuala Lumpur is famous
for its firefly colonies that flicker in unison by the thousands like festival lights. A similar firefly cruise is found in the Santubong area in
Sarawak and Kampung Ibok in Terengganu.

In Sarawak, there are also riverine or coastal cruises outside Kuching, where you get to watch crocodiles along riverbanks. A little further
down the river and you may see dolphins. Borneo, with its dense jungle and sparser population, is home to a simply mind-boggling variety
of wildlife. River cruising in Kinabatangan, Sabah, one of the longest rivers in Borneo, offers some of the best opportunities to observe the
Bornean fauna. This is one of only two areas in Asia with 10 primate species. Borneo also prides itself on being home to the Proboscis
Monkey, Maroon Langur and Bornean Gibbon.
The Sukau river village is located on the boundary of an important protected area in Sabah, the Kinabatangan Wildlife Sanctuary. As a
protected wetland site in Sabah, Kinabatangan is a conservation area for species such as the Orangutan, the Borneo Elephant and other
wetland animals including Storm’s stork and the Flat-headed Wild Cat.

is Sarawak's premier national park, located deep in the
rainforest; at the last count, it featured 20,000 animal
species and 3500 plant species. Quite apart from the
park's primary rainforest, which is characterized by clear
rivers and high-altitude vegetation, there are three
dramatically eroded mountains, including fifty-metre-high
limestone spikes known as the Pinnacles.

The Niah Cave is located in the Niah National Park in
Sarawak. Humans inhabited the Niah Cave some 40,000
years ago. Early Sarawak communities buried their dead
in boat-shaped coffins, arranged around the cave walls
dating of the contents has proved that the caves had
been used as a cemetery for tens of thousands of years.

Cameron Highlands
Amid the lofty peaks of Banjaran Titiwangsa, lies
the various outposts of the CAMERON HIGHLANDS
(1524m), Malaysia's most extensive hill station. Used as a
weekend retreat since the 1920s and still, despite hotels
and luxury apartments, quintessentially is English in
character. Its rolling green fields dotted with country
cottages, farms and a golf course brings a certain kind of
charm to this hillside resort. Weekenders flock here in the
thousands to cool down and go walking in the hills
and forests.

NATIONAL

, a two-hour
bus and boat
journey northeast
of Kuching,
occupies the
northern section of
the Muara Tebas
Peninsula at the
mouth of Sungei
Bako. It's a
beautiful area and
the best place to
see wildlife in
Sarawak. Many
people come on a
day-trip and then
end up staying
longer, taking
picnics to one of
the seven beaches,
relaxing at the park
headquarters area,
or following the
trails. You'll see
plenty of flora and
fauna, including the
strange pitcher
plants, whose deep,
mouth-shaped lids
open to trap water
and insects which
are then digested in
the soupy liquid.

Yes, this is your room says Miss Yap as she hands me
the keys. I am excited. I have never spent a night in a
tree-house before. Your bags will be along shortly she
adds. The porter will carry them up to your room. You
won't have to do a thing.

I have a big grin on my face as I walk up the stairs. The
tree-house is about 20 feet above ground in the forest
canopy and the stairs are a little steep. In my excitement
to get in, I can't find the right key and I fiddle with them
until finally it unlocks...all this time hoping I don't drop
them.

Wow! I love this room! The bed is right in the middle with
windows all around. I rush to look out of all three sides of
the room. I can see everything from here. I am up in the
treetops! I head to the sliding doors and push them open.
Another wow! The ocean is right below me! I pause for a
couple of minutes to take all this in. Ahhh.......It is
wonderful to be alive.

Tree-house Resort - Sarawak
Off we go. Three boats in friendly competition. Our first
stop is a small temple of sorts erected on some boulders
on the beach. The local fishermen make a visit to this
temple, for a prayer of safety before they head out to
sea. How appropriate for this temple to be our first stop
as well. Hey look in the trees.....Malaysian Eagles nesting!

Next we come across some fishing villages all brightly
painted. We slow down to take some pictures. These pics
will really make some great colorful posters. As we head
closer to be beach, I notice that this sleepy little fishing
village is also into boat building. The guide says that the
craft of boat building has been handed down from
generation to generation. It takes about six months to
build a basic fishing boat. We get close to some fishing
trawlers. The fishermen are smiling. Is it us or is it their
haul? Perhaps a little bit of both. They are proud to show
off their catch of the day.

imposing and alluring at once.
