Karyaneka - Walk the gardens or watch artist at their craft
KARYANEKA , established in 1982, is a
handicraft centre supported by the
Malaysian government. Here you can find
handicraft and souvenirs produced by
Malaysia's very own craftsmen and small
industry. Located at Jalan Conlay (Conlay
street) it is about a 10 minute walk for the
Golden Triangle.

KARYANEKA has a wide selection of
handicraft items reflecting Malaysia's ethnic
and cultural heritage. The center sells
Malaysian handicraft including batik, rattan
baskets, blowpipes, woodcarvings and silver
craft items. There is also a Craft Museum
within the compound and individual craft huts
where you can watch craftsmen at work.
These craft huts are set in a working
environment to replicate the original
atmosphere of these craftsmen in the
villages, including the tools they use for their
creative art work. The effect is to recreate
the original atmosphere and setting to give
visitors the total experience, be it of songket
weaving, brass work, woodcarving,
traditional blacksmith, batik painting or
pottery making. Visitors can also try their
hand at basket weaving and batik painting.

Central Market in down town Kuala Lumpur, a great place for handicraft
Central Market in Kuala Lumpur, watch artist at their craft
Central Market once Kuala Lumpur's largest "wet" market is
now a unique venue for locals and tourists alike. Refurbished
old market stalls are now kiosks for individual merchants
selling all kind of merchandise from personalised T-shirts and
handicrafts, to portrait artists and interesting paraphernalia.
The mezzanine floor encompasses a "Kampung" (Malay
Village) like atmosphere and only traders specialising in
traditional crafts like Tekad (gold embroidery) weaving, Wau
Kelantan (giant kites), Songket (gold weaving) and Sutera
(silk), Batik making, Kelantan silver and Malay antiques are
allowed in this area. With an average monthly turnout of 1.5
million visitors, it is regarded as a "not to be missed
destination " in Kuala Lumpur.

Petaling Street in Chinatown - spend the evening browsing the many colorful stalls.
The Petaling Street Night Market
(just as busy in the daytime) is in
Chinatown. It is a lively walking mall and a
bargain center for all types of
merchandise from clothes, to shoes,
watches, t-shirts, DVDs, handbags,
sunglasses and electronic items to name
a few. The best time to visit is at night
with it's parade of colorful stalls. The
lights and sounds of Petaling Street is
dazzling and the bargains are fantastic! It
is also a place to try out some local
dishes like Roti Canai and Nasi Campur.
Walk by colorful umbrellas and carts
selling a variety of vegetables and fruits.
Sample some of these fruits grown locally
and within the region.
