FRIM is a popular spot for picnickers, joggers, bicyclers, tourists and nature
study groups. It is also a great place for family events, treasure hunts,
camping, birdwatching, jungle trekking and nature photography. Visit the
traditional Malay houses and  walk the tranquil gardens. Picnic by the
waterfalls or catch a glimpse of the 'monster fish' lurking within the ponds on
the grounds. For the nature lover, the Arboreta, a wide open space planted
with specific species of plants and trees is a “living museum” and a learning
experience. The Herbarium houses over 200,000 specimens - try counting
them all!

If that isn't enough to do, visit the museum and find out how FRIM rose to
become one of the country's leading institutions in tropical forestry research.
This 600-ha site in Kepong, just 16 km northwest of Kuala Lumpur, promotes
the management and use of forest resources through research, technology
and application. The  three divisions of FRIM; The Forestry Division (providing
data and guidelines for managing the natural forests); The Product
Development Division (focusing on developing forest-based industries); and
The Biotechnology Division (creating new planting material through genetic
engineering), have earned the Institute a name for itself in tropical forestry
with award-winning research and international collaboration. FRIM also
manages six field research stations in various parts of the country. After the
museum, stop at the nursery or check out the wetlands. Take time to
appreciate nature. Spend a day at FRIM!

FRIM - Pond Area
There are a number of ponds in
FRIM, the remains of tin mining
activity of long ago. These ponds
are now stocked with fish, the
biggest of them all, the Arapaimas
or the monster fish, as it is called, is
nearly two meters long.

The museum in FRIM has been in
existence since 1917. At that time,
the collection focused on wood
specimens from the different states.

Today you can see artifacts made
from wood and other forest products
on display.
Some of these artifacts are: fishing
equipment,
traditional household utensils,
agricultural equipment,
traditional musical instruments and
wood carvings. On the upper floor,
aspects of FRIM research activities
are displayed.
Some of the services provided by
the Institute include training courses
from landscaping to wood
identification, rattan and bamboo
product manufacture, a nursery,
library and venues for local and
international conferences.
