Lotus Shoes or Bound Foot Shoes
During the 10th century, over 90% of women in China bound their
feet. They also spent most of their time making and embroidering
shoes as the beauty of Chinese women at that time was judged by
the size of their feet. The ideal foot size was three inches in length
and shaped like a lotus bud hence the 'Lotus Shoes'.

Foot binding began in the royal palaces of China around the 10th
century. There are many stories as to the origin of binding the feet
of young girls. One story is of an empress born with a club foot.
She persuaded her husband to make it obligatory for young girls to
bind their feet. Another suggest that a prince had a favorite
concubine who danced on her toes and all the women wanted to
walk like her.

Although the practice of binding the feet of young girls is no longer
a trend in China and some parts of Asia, you can still see the Lotus
Shoes on display or for sale as a reminder of the life and times of
Chinese women.

You can visit the store in Melaka where these shoes are still made
and talk to the cobblers that make the shoes. It will be an
interesting experience.
Beaded shoes is part of the history of Melaka.
A craft passed down from centuries these
hand made shoes takes hours to complete.
The tiny colorful beads are hand-sewn onto
the shoes.

Mata Kuching
fruit
Literally translated,
Mata Kuching means
'cat eyes'...and by
the looks of it, you
can guess why it is
called the 'mata
kuching' fruit. The
white flesh that
surrounds the black
seed is soft, sweet
and juicy. Encased
in a tan colored skin
that is easily peeled,
the mata kuching
fruit is a great
snacking fruit any
time of the day.
