Read About It.....
The imposing dark timber palace of Istana Ke Sultanan
on Jalan Kota is a reconstruction of the original
fifteenth-century istana, complete with sharply sloping,
multi-layered roofs. Inside, you'll find re-creations of
scenes from Malay court life, as well as costumes and
local crafts. East of here, the Independence Memorial
Museum charts the events surrounding the lead-up to
independence in 1957.

The Muzium Rakyat on Jalan Kota houses several
displays, but its most interesting is the Museum of
Enduring Beauty on the third floor, which shows the
many ways in which people have sought to alter their
appearance, including head deformation, dental
mutilations, tattooing, scarification and foot-binding.

St Paul's Church - was constructed in 1521 by the
Portuguese, and visited by the Jesuit missionary St
Francis Xavier, whose body was brought here for
burial; and a brass plaque on the south wall of the
chancel marks the spot. A winding path beside the
church brings you to the sturdy Stadthuys , a collection
of buildings that dates from 1660 and was used as a
town hall during the Dutch and British administrations. It
boasts typically Dutch interior staircases and high
windows, and now houses the Museum of Ethnography,
which displays Malay and Chinese ceramics and
weaponry and a blow-by-blow account of Melakan
history.

The Maritime Museum on the quayside to the south of
Stadthuys, is housed in a replica of a Portuguese cargo
ship that sank here in the sixteenth century. Model
ships and paintings chart Melaka's maritime history.
Heading north of Stadthuys up Jalan Laksamana,
skirting the busy junction with Jalan Temenggong and
taking Jalan Bendahara directly ahead, you're in the
centre of Melaka's tumbledown Little India, a line of
saree shops, interspersed with a few eating houses.
East along Jalan Temenggong brings you to Bukit
China, the ancestral burial ground of the town's
Chinese community; it dates from around 1409 but is
now used as a park.

Kampung Hulu mosque built in the 1700's
The Kampung Hulu mosque is the oldest in
Melaka. It was built in the 1700s.
Founded some 600 years ago, Melaka is where the
history of Malaysia began. This city is rich with
historical and cultural attractions. It is located 120 km
south-west of Malaysia's capital, Kuala Lumpur.

A visit to Melaka is a must for foreign tourists. Places of
interest include the mausoleum of the legendary Malay
warrior, Hang Tuah, Hang Tuah's Well, the mausoleum
of Tun Teja (a princess at the centre of the Hang Tuah
legend), the replica of the Melaka Sultan's Palace, A
Famosa (the remains of the Portuguese fort), The
Stadthuys (the Dutch administrative complex), St.
Francis Xavier's Church and a variety of Museums.
The Chinese who came to Melaka and adopted Malay
customs and language were known as Baba and
Nyonya and traces of their heritage (known as
Peranakan) can be seen in Chinatown as well as at the
Baba and Nyonya Heritage museum. Visit the well of
Hang Li Poh ( a princess from China who married the
fifth ruler of Melaka) and then walk-up Bukit China
(Chinese Hill), a Chinese burial ground with some
12,500 tombstones dating back to the Ming Dynasty.
Up on this hill is a panoramic view of this historic city.
Another main attraction of Melaka is the variety of food
including Nyonya, Thai, Chinese, Indian, Chitty and
Portuguese cuisine, in addition to the always delightful
Malay cuisine. Enjoy a tropical island getaway at Pulau
Besar and Pulau Upeh by taking the frequent boat
services to the islands.
