Cameron Highlands
Amid the lofty peaks of Banjaran Titiwangsa, lies the
various outposts of the CAMERON HIGHLANDS
(1524m), Malaysia's most extensive hill station. Used
as a weekend retreat since the 1920s and still,
despite hotels and luxury apartments, quintessentially
is English in character. Its rolling green fields dotted
with country cottages, farms and a golf course brings
a certain kind of charm to this hillside resort.
Weekenders flock here in the thousands to cool down
and go walking in the hills and forests.
The highlands encompass three small towns: Ringlet,
the site of the famous tea plantations; Tanah Rata,
the principal settlement of the highlands, and
Brinchang, renowned for its farms. Tours of the whole
region are organized by various hotels so inquire
before checking in.
The Cameron Highlands trails take in some of the
most spectacular scenery in Malaysia. You can get
sketch maps at some shops and hotels in Tanah
Rata. If you want to attempt any unofficial routes, you
must go with a guide from the tourist office and you
must get a permit from the District Office, just north of
Tanah Rata (Mon-Fri 8a-1pm & 3p-4.30pm, tel
05/491 1105). Temperatures drop dramatically at
night, so bring warm clothes.
Cameron Highlands is perched on one corner of the
Titiwangsa Range in Pahang. The Titiwangsa Range
is the backbone of Peninsular Malaysia, stretching
from Southern Thailand, all the way down to the valley
of Negri Sembilan in the south. Temperatures can
drop to about 24ºC at night in Cameron Highlands
and it is not uncommon to see log fireplaces in living
rooms and even bedrooms of cottages built during
the colonial days.

John Archibald Russell came to Malaya in 1890 at the
age of seven. It wasn't until 1927 on a visit to
Cameron Highlands, that he found the rolling hills and
high rainfall ideal for tea growing. In 1929 the first
Boh Tea Plantation was established. The name ‘Boh’
is derived from Bohlia - the origin of tea in the
Szechuan province of ancient China. Today, the Boh
plantation is the biggest local producer of tea
products.
RINGLET, a settlement in the Cameron Highlands is best-known for the Boh Tea Estate. Here you can see the whole process, from the picking of the tea leaves to processing and packing.

Hiking in the Cameron Highlands
Since many of the Cameron Highlands' walks start
from nearby, the genteel town of TANAH RATA , the
highlands' main development, is an ideal base. A
couple of waterfalls and three reasonably high
mountain peaks are all within hiking distance, and the
town itself is festooned with white buildings, flowers
and parks.

The MNS-BOH Nature Study Centre was set up in
1989 using unoccupied worker’ quarters generously
provided by BOH Plantations. The Centre has been
established as a retreat for nature study and
appreciation as well as for quiet relaxation. The
Centre is the ideal place to escape from the heat and
hustle of the cities. You can begin the day with
catching the sunrise and then have breakfast on the
verandah of the chalets. For bird watchers, early
morning is the best time to spot some of the 100
species of birds that have been seen so far.
The more energetic could climb up Gunung Cantik
and experience what it is like to be in a mossy forest.
Visitors can also take a loop walk from the Centre to
the factory where free tours are conducted to explain
the history of tea and how it is processed. For longer
walks, there is the track to Kg. Kuala Boh, a large
Orang Asli village. The cool nights in Cameron’s are
very suitable for outdoor BBQs.

The fast-expanding travellers' hangout of CHERATING ,
47km north of Kuantan, hugs the northern end of a
windswept bay, protected from the breeze by the shelter of
a rocky cliff. Although most of the locals have long since
moved to a small village further south, the settlement still
tries to reflect kampung life. It's a good place in which to
unwind, with a nightlife that comes as close as the east
coast gets to raging. Cherating is ideal for windsurfing, and
you can rent equipment by the hour. Clambering over the
rocks at the eastern end of the bay brings you to a tiny
secluded cove.
Any express or local bus between Kuala Terengganu and
Kuantan will drop you off at Cherating - tell the driver
beforehand. Two rough tracks lead from the road down into
the main part of the village, about five minutes' away,
although the one nearest the bridge is the most direct. The
main drag is a tiny surfaced road that runs roughly parallel
to the beach, and this is where you'll find most of the
restaurants and bars, as well as the provisions stores and
Travel Post where you can book bus tickets for destinations
in Malaysia and to Singapore, as well as local river and
snorkeling trips. They also have Internet terminals, an
international fax line, and money changing services.

Located in the cultural and business metropolis of Kuala Lumpur the Swiss-Garden caters to international business travelers as well as family vacationers. The Railway is 3 kilometers away and the Plaza Rakyat and Hang Tuah LRT stations are within walking distance.
