Just 56km west of Kuala Lumpur in the state of Pahang,
and across the waters a short distance lies the island of
Tioman. Famed for being "Bali Hai" in the movie South
Pacific, Tioman Island is 23 miles long and seven miles
wide. It is the biggest in the chain of 64 islands and a
diver's paradise with clear waters and gardens of coral
hosting a colorful assortment of fish life.

If diving and snorkeling is not your bag, then opt for the
other activities around the island like rock climbing,
surfing, bird watching, trekking, water sports or just
exploring the island!

Animal life in Tioman Island include monkeys,
mousedeer, flying foxes, reptiles, large monitor lizards
and sea turtles.
Rock Climbing
The vast granite backbone on the
island of Tioman provides an
excellent opportunity - from
beginners to experienced climbers -
to scale for some awesome views.

The Dragon Horn, locally know as
'Gunung Nenek Semukut' is in
Kampung Mukut. It is the most
challenging with a 690 metre climb.
In the same vicinity are 15 to 20
other spots catered more to the
beginner climber. Other climbs
include 3 new routes in Kampung
Tekek and 10 in Kampung Juara.
Surfing
Surfing is on the rise on the island.
Surf is up during the monsoon
months from November to January.
Waves up to 15 feet can be enjoyed
around Kampung Juara.
Birdwatching
Tioman is a bird watcher's paradise. A survey done by the
National University of Singapore in 1993 listed 87 species
of birds, both local and migratory, including sparrows,
kingfishers, swifts and the endangered Christmas Frigate.
The fruit bat is also found here and can be easily seen
hanging upside down from tree branches in Kampung
Tekek.
Trekking
The most popular trail found on the
island is the 7km Tekek-Juara trail
with interest flora and fauna. You can
also trek from Kampung Air Batang
to Kampung Salang. At the Kampung
Mukut trail, you will come across a
waterfall that was featured in the
movie South Pacific and the site of
the 'Happy Talk' song sequence.

Diving/Snorkeling
Most dive sites are found on the west coast where the
waters are shallow and surf calmer. Tulai and Renggis
are excellent spots with a number of wrecks, mostly
fishing trawlers purposely sunk to create a diving
experience.

Artificial reefs are created to protect the environment
and encourage the growth of different kinds of hard
and soft corals. Currently there are four artificial wrecks
in the marine park with the Pahang Royal Reef being
the first and the DHL Reef being the largest.

There is also an underwater 'Tea Garden' made up of
concrete tables and chairs just below the marine park
jetty. Tioman is also a great place for beginner divers
with PADI certified operators on the island.

Things to look out for while diving or snorkeling are soft
and hard corals, endangered giant clams and turtles,
and fish species like the triggerfish, angelfish, grouper,
barracuda and the black tip shark.
